Katy Perry is back!
The songstress phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest to talk about her new single “Roar,” performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, and her overall, new and improved self!
Katy, who kept us on our toes by releasing four teaser trailers for the hit new single, like burning her iconic Teenage Dream wig, explains the imagery “is just metaphorically speaking. It’s time to move on to the next era, which is bigger and better and just something different because we all know that we like the Teenage Dream era, but we all evolve … The people who bought my record were 13 and 16 in 2010 and those people are now 16 and 19 … and I’m older and I’ve got new things in my life and new perspectives.”
Katy, who separated from her now ex-husband Russell Brand in 2011, adds that “Roar” is “a song about speaking up for yourself because there was a time in my life I didn’t stand for anything, so I fell for everything … Sometimes you can feel burdened by people or a thing or a relationship and it causes you to go inside yourself versus say ‘Hey! No, this isn’t okay.’ So it has been very therapeutic writing these songs. I’m getting myself stronger.”
So therapeutic in fact, Katy’s able to laugh now at the trials and tribulations she’s gone through. “For a while I was figuring out what was I going to call this next record because Teenage Dream, here I was on that cotton candy cloud, and then I kind of got a little bit of a punch in the face, a little falling down the stairs,” Katy adds, laughing. “So I wanted to call the next record The Adult Reality (Doing Well in Therapy), but I thought that’d be giving away too much.”
The album title Katy did end up choosing however is still meaningful to her. She explains she titled it Prism “because I’ve let a lot of light into my life and now I can beam that light out to my fans.”
And although Katy talks of the end of the Teenage Dream era, she reassures us it’s not the complete end of her cotton candy days, only an evolution.
“It’s still going to be fun and … still fantastical, but at the end of it all, it’s essentially me. I’m just going to bring you me. It’s reminiscent of when I first started out when I was 19 and 20, where it was kind of a little bit more raw … I want to get closer to the fans as a human being.”
So will the grown-up Katy miss anything from her old colorful life? “I’ll probably be integrating it in a new way especially when I go on tour next year. It will just be kind of an evolved version of Teenage Dream. And when you see me on tour, you’re always going to get the songs you want to hear … I’m not deserting any of it.”
And while we are just recovering from Katy leading us on with her teasers up until the release of “Roar,” the singer admits she’s only just begun releasing what she refers to as “golden nuggets.”
“It takes a process for it to be properly revealed, but I’ll let you know, there are some exciting things coming,” Katy admits. And one of those things? Performing at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards!
However, Katy kept coy, saying: “Let’s just say, I’m going to play.” “I’m really excited to be a part of the VMAs. I’ve been keeping that secret for months and months and months and I’m just excited to [be a part of it] … I think [Lady] Gaga is playing. Miley [Cyrus] is playing. Kanye [West] is playing. It seems super exciting. With the VMAs anything can happen. I’m coming in to bring my best.”
