Eugenio Derbez, who stars in upcoming movie Instructions Not Included, phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest to talk about the Spanglish flick.
“I did this movie because I fell in love with Life is Beautiful,” Eugenio, who also serves as the movie’s director, explains. “After I saw Life is Beautiful I said, ‘I need to do something like this.’ A comedy but with a lot of heart.”
Instructions Not Included is about a “love story between a father and his daughter, [but] it’s not like Woody Allen, this is a different kind of love,” the actor jokes.
And although he knew what kind of film he wanted to make, Eugenio did run in to a few bumps in the road during the process, particularly when it came to casting the actress to play his daughter.
“I started looking for a boy at the beginning — the script was written originally for a boy — and I couldn’t find it because it had to be blonde blue-eyed boy with perfect English and Spanish … and I couldn’t find it,” Eugenio explains.
“So then I opened [it up] for a girl and then … two weeks before shooting I hadn’t found [anyone], so then I started tweeting and I finally found Loreto [Peralta],” an adorable 8-year-old he’s dubbed “the new Dakota Fanning.”
The actor adds those who don’t speak Spanish need not fear about seeing Instructions Not Included. “If you’re American … this is bilingual and subtitled for the American audience … everyone is going to love it and it’s for all audiences.”
A rave review he’s already received? “[Eva Longoria] was crying at the very end. She loved it.”
Aside from directing the upcoming flick, Eugenio adds he’s been busy trying to bring Saturday Night Live to Mexico!
“I just bought the rights and we’re trying to produce it in Mexico. I just did the deal, so we are still in pre-production, but the idea is to have our version of SNL in Mexico.”
Catch Instructions Not Included in theaters this Friday, August 30.
